Born in Florida to Caribbean parents, Joanna Henry is a painter and ceramicist currently based out of South Carolina. She is an ArtPop Street Gallery alum and the Artist Development Specialist for the Catawba Indian Nation.
My work analyzes Afro Caribbean and African American culture, its connections, and the positioning of a black woman as the author. I aim to reclaim the narrative through each piece I create. When I paint I use he contextual resources like family photos and the shared oral history of my family to create compositions that depict the lives and cultures that influence me. In my ceramic work like to use the hand-building technique of coiling and pinching each layer of clay until I have a completed vessel. Creating in this way makes each piece I make inherently unique and combines traditional techniques with contemporary processes.
